Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação (PPGEdu)
The Program, Structure & Committees
The Graduate Program in Education (PPGEdu) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Recife campus, was created in 1978, initially offering a master's degree program. In 2002, the program expanded with the introduction of a doctoral program. Its mission is to provide high-level human, ethical, and academic training, based on the integration of teaching, research, and mentorship. The program aims for a critical and proactive approach to strengthening the process of democratizing education and Brazilian society.
The objectives of PPGEdu are:
a) to train highly qualified researchers, committed to the production and advancement of scientific knowledge, to engage in research and teaching activities in higher education and educational institutions, including basic education.
b) to provide students with a solid foundation in the field of education, enabling them to develop scientific and technical-professional competence.
c) to offer suitable environments and resources for the development of research and analysis of the educational phenomenon, in its multiple dimensions and influences.
d) to encourage and promote the dissemination of studies and research.
e) to foster academic and scientific cooperation among researchers, both nationally and internationally.
The academic identity of PPGEdu, the quality of is faculty and students’ intellectual production, and the strong professional placement of its alumni in teaching and public education management are recognized at local, regional, and national levels. In recent years, the Program has developed a systematic self-assessment policy, involving the participation of faculty, students, and alumni in the development of prioritized actions and the monitoring of its political-formative planning. This process is guided by the following principles:
I – university autonomy in the management, teaching, research, and extension processes;
II – respect for the internal democracy of the university;
III – academic freedom;
IV – inclusion and accessibility for faculty, technical-administrative staff, students, and the community.
PPGEdu’s faculty consists of 58 professors organized around 8 Research Lines, which are structured aroind thematic axes that serve as reference parameters for the admission and retention of both professors and students in the Master's and Doctoral programs. Currently, in line with the new National Postgraduate Plan (2024-2028) and the Institutional Postgraduate Plan (2021-2025) of UFPE, the Program's main goals are:
-
to increase incentives for building networks and partnerships with countries in Latin America and Africa;
-
to expand its inclusion and diversity policies by developing an action plan to support the retention of quota students; and
-
to consolidate initiatives aimed at internationalization (Management Plan 2024-2026).
The operation of PPGEdu has been continuously improved over the years, always guided by the principles of democratic management. The program is overseen by a Collegiate composed of all faculty members from the eight Research Lines, which meets monthly to discuss and decide on the program's structural issues. This includes the participation and voting rights of student representatives from the Master's and Doctoral programs. Additionally, PPGEdu also holds bi-monthly meetings with the coordinators of the Research Lines to monitor the specific actions outlined in its four-year Strategic Plan. At the start of each academic semester, a meeting is held with all students to present the general guidelines for the Program's operations, address student concerns and define collective actions.
