Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição (Posnutri)
Web Content Display
The Postgraduate Program in Nutrition, through its staff, has worked autonomously as a consultant in the planning of public policies for the fields of Experimental and Clinical Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science and Technology, although it is still aligned with the Department of Nutrition (DN) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). Alumni of the Postgraduate Program in Nutrition at UFPE have been absorbed by the society and have exerted transformative actions within it. These days, the social importance of the Postgraduate Program in Nutrition at UFPE's scope is not only regional and national, but resonates globally.
The Recife campus of the Postgraduate Program in Nutrition (PPGN) at the Federal University of Pernambuco offers a stricto sensu course at the Masters and PhD levels that was implemented in 1975 and 1995 by Professor Nelson Ferreira de Castro Chaves. Both are recommended and recognized by the Scientific Technical Council (CTC) of CAPES, and are currently among the best graduate courses in Nutrition in Brazil. Our goal is to provide critical, creative and innovative training in the field of Food and Nutrition for a highly qualified labour force and multipliers of research planning and development, a teaching profession in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and the promotion of information and education activities in the various aspects of this field of knowledge.
The course runs for a maximum of 24 months for the Master and 48 months for the PhD, and the student must take a respective 31 credits (25 compulsory and 6 electives) and 25 credits (16 compulsory and 9 electives) over that period. The program has 3 areas of concentration, namely: Nutrition in Public Health, Food Science and Experimental Bases of Nutrition with 5 research topics.
The program's faculty includes 25 qualified professors in the research fields and topics and support from funding agencies for financing and scholarships. It has also partnered with other teaching and research institutions in Brazil and abroad. The Program has been awarded grants from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Foundation for the Support of Science and Technology of the State of Pernambuco (FACEPE). In addition, it receives foreign scholarship students selected by the CAPES PEC-PG program and by the OAS (Organization of American States) scholarship program, along with other agreements signed through the edicts of our Foundations for fostering research.
Goals
Nutrition and food are immanent to all species, particularly to humans, giving rise to the scope of science and technology that stem from these fields of knowledge. Currently, the Postgraduate Course's epistemological proposal is to take the scientific knowledge of Nutrition, Food Science and its correlates by object, essentially shaping the basis for the transformative action of the postgraduate priority on the reality in Brazil.
Throughout the course, the basis will be undertaken through dialogue, the discussion of ideas, the application of the scientific method, through methodical and unrestricted access to scientific literature, the encouragement of critical analysis of specialized technical-scientific literature, free-thinking, stimulating creativity and innovation in the different areas of concentration and by finally encouraging a multi and interdisciplinary view of reality.
The purpose of the Program is to train a highly qualified labour force in the field of Nutrition and Food Science at Masters and PhD levels for the planning and development of research, teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and the promotion of information and education activities in the various aspects of these fields of knowledge.
Cooperation and Exchange
The common institutional exchange in the Department of Nutrition has been greatly extended to the current day since the Program was started. The Department has always been considered well by other public and private institutions in the country. Through several of these exchanges, there has been an intense exchange of researchers and students between institutions. For example, there are local, national and international collaborative actions with institutions in Belgium and Canada. We have collaborated and welcomed support from institutions such as:
-
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - Universidade de Londres: Departamentos de Epidemiologia e Nutrição
-
Inserm - Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale
