The STI - Superintendência de Tecnologia da Informação was created in 1967, as the instance of UFPE responsible for the installation and management of its computer system. STI went through several phases until reaching its current structure. Initially, the unit was called Electronic Computing Center and its main attribution was limited to the training of specialized personnel, to extension courses and to the teaching of subjects related to computing.

Later, the office was renamed the Professor Manuel Zaluar Nunes Computing Center. In 1971, the unit received the nomenclature of Data Processing Center (CPD), with which it remained until 1974, when it became the Data Processing Center (NPD). In that same year, with the support of the NPD, UFPE started to offer Postgraduate courses in Informatics. In 1976, another advance was made with the acquisition of a building of its own.

Over the years, the Data Processing Center has expanded its help in developing research, in the University's administrative system, in creating projects that aimed to better meet academic needs, in addition to providing practical services, such as equipment maintenance and meeting requests from the community outside UFPE, such as federal, state and municipal public agencies and companies.

In the 90's, the University witnessed a significant technological expansion, with the acquisition of new and modern equipment and with the completion of projects developed by the NPD. In 1992, the unit, in partnership with the University of Rio Grande Foundation (FURG), implemented the Library Automation System, helping with bibliographic research and services for loans, renewals, and book reservations.

At the end of the millennium, the Processing Center was renamed the Information Technology Superintendence, reaching a history of over 40 years of services provided.
