The General Doctoral Examination (EGD)

The purpose of EGD is to ensure that the PhD student in Physics at UFPE has a solid background and a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental areas of Physics.

Such training will certainly be useful for you to achieve the degree of excellence in your thesis project, in whatever your area of ¿¿expertise.

When preparing for the exam, the student will systematically review his general knowledge of the main fundamental disciplines of Physics.

In this sense, it is essential that the student consult the EGD exams from previous semesters to become familiar with the style of the questions, resolution time, etc. (see evidence file below).

Format

The EGD consists of four tests (Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Classical Mechanics and Classical Electrodynamics) held twice a year: usually in early March and early August.

The subjects of the tests correspond essentially to the menus of the courses in Quantum Theory I, Statistical Mechanics and Classical Electrodynamics I of PG and the courses in Classical Mechanics 3 and 4 of the Bachelor of Physics (see the menus below).

The tests are applied over a week, with a test each day lasting 3 hours.

Each test has four questions, of which the student can choose three to solve.

It is not allowed to consult books or notes. To pass a test, the student needs to get a grade greater than or equal to 5.0 (the maximum grade is 10.0).

It is essential that the student consult the EGD exams from previous semesters to become familiar with the style of the questions, resolution time, etc. (see below).

The PhD student must be approved at EGD within one year after enrolling in the course. Therefore, he has two chances to pass the four tests, being able to choose at each chance to do all the tests at once or just a fraction of them.

In the special case in which the PhD student enrolls in the Program and the first EGD occurs within 3 months after enrollment, then he or she may or may not do this EGD free of charge.

In other words, the first EGD that will actually count for this student will be the semester following the date of registration.

The Doctoral student who after two effective chances fails to pass the four EGD tests will be dismissed from the Program. Master's or Undergraduate students can take the EGD as many times as they wish without any burden.

ATTENTION: Students from other states or countries can also do EGD free of charge in their own institutions, just by contacting the PG Secretariat (posgrad.df@ufpe.br).
