The Program The Program

The Postgraduate Program in Chemical Engineering (PPGEQ-UFPE) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) belongs to the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ). It was inaugurated in 1994 with the implementation of the Master's Course in Chemical Engineering. The PhD course started in 2005.

The field of Chemical and Biochemical Process Engineering at PPGEQ-UFPE is divided into six research areas: Chemical Reactors and Catalysis, Biochemical Processes, Industrial Chemical Processes, Environmental Engineering, Modeling, Simulation and Process Control and Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Technologies.

The curriculum grid is composed by core and elective courses. The core courses correspond to the minimum amount of credits required to meet the general objectives of the program and is also necessary to confer unity. They include basic disciplines that form the pillars of Chemical Engineering, such as: mathematical methods, thermodynamics, transport phenomena and chemical reactors. The elective courses complement the student’s knowledge in the chosen research area (in accordance with the field of study and the goals of the program). To complete the curriculum, students have to meet the minimum amount of 24 credits for master's degree and 36 credits for doctorate. The credit unit corresponds to 15 hours of theoretical or practical classes.

The laboratory infrastructure of the Department of Chemical Engineering at UFPE (DEQ-UFPE), available for the work of PPGEQ-UFPE’s research groups, is almost entirely composed by its own physical structure. PPGEQ-UFPE also has a shared (multi-user) laboratory infrastructure at the institution. The research laboratories have support units, as well as mechanics, electrical, electronics and hyalotechnics workshops. Currently, 17 research laboratories are active. In addition to the research laboratories, since March 2019 the PPGEQ-UFPE also has several laboratories located at the Integrated Laboratory for Technology in Oil, Gas and Biofuels (LITPEG-UFPE). LITPEG-UFPE is the result of an investment of R$ 80 million, where several professors from PPGEQ-UFPE develop their research, either full-time at this center, or in collaboration with its researchers. The LITPEG-UFPE laboratories are installed in a complex of three buildings with a total area of 13,280 m²: a seven-floor laboratory block (12,222 m²), a shed for the installation of pilot plants (829 m²) and a technical block (229 m² ) where the refrigeration, power and sewage treatment units are located. Thirteen laboratories are part of the structure of LITPEG-UFPE.

Goals

Contribute to the development of Chemical Engineering, to stimulate knowledge and to promote a solid, academic and research training of its human resources at the level of master and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering, in the field of Chemical and Biochemical Process Engineering.
