The Postgraduate Program in Biochemistry and Physiology is the result of the merger of the Master's Courses in Biochemistry and Biological Sciences (Physiology) at UFPE. The initiative to merge the two programs came from the professors' desire to implement a Doctorate Course in these areas at UFPE. In 2007, the merger was approved by CAPES, giving rise to the "Postgraduate Program in Biochemistry and Physiology - Master's Level" at the Center for Biological Sciences at UFPE. In October 2008, the first class at Doctoral Level began. The Complete Program was approved by the CNE - Ordinance MEC 524/2008, DOU 04/30/2008.

The Course aims to provide Universities, Research Institutions and Brazilian industries, in general, and the Northeast, in particular, with the human element specially trained and, as such, duly qualified to carry out advanced research and teaching activities in Biochemistry and Physiology.

The Course belongs to the "Biological Sciences II" area of CAPES and obtained the concept "4" in the last quadrennial evaluation in 2017.
