Research Scholarship Allocation Process

In Brazil, graduate scholarships are awarded by public funding agencies, primarily the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), which allocate scholarship quotas to higher education institutions in accordance with their own regulations. The eligibility criteria established by these agencies are publicly available on their respective institutional websites.

The criteria governing the allocation of scholarships are fully established in the PPGDH Internal Scholarship Regulations, which are publicly available on the Program’s official website, ensuring transparency and equal access to information for all graduate students.

The scholarship allocation process is based primarily on two criteria: (i) the applicant’s ranking in the Program’s admissions process, and (ii) eligibility under the Program’s affirmative action policies. All scholarship applications are carefully reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, composed of PPGDH faculty members and student representatives, thereby ensuring fairness, transparency, and participatory oversight throughout the process. The Committee’s decisions are subsequently ratified by the Program’s Graduate Council during its regular meetings.

Research fellowships are academic in nature and are linked to the activities of the Program’s faculty members who made positions available during the selection process.

Current Scholarship Availability at PPGDH

CAPES Scholarships: The Program currently holds five (5) CAPES scholarships. According to the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) Office of Graduate Studies, this allocation is expected to remain unchanged through 2027.

CNPq Scholarship: The Program currently has one (1) CNPq scholarship.

FACEPE Scholarships: Scholarships funded by the Pernambuco State Foundation for the Support of Science and Technology (FACEPE) are awarded through competitive grant calls submitted by Program faculty members. Students admitted to the 2025 cohort did not submit proposals under FACEPE funding calls; therefore, no FACEPE scholarships are currently associated with this cohort.

All procedures adopted by the PPGDH are guided by the principles of legality, transparency, equity, and public accountability. The applicable regulations are formally established and publicly available for consultation by the academic community and society at large.
