In this lecture, I will first review the effects of Kerr nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion that enable the propagation of optical solitons in fiber waveguides, commonly understood as pulses able to propagate without distortion over long distances. Then, I will present some background of ultrafast fiber laser technology and will show how, in active fiber systems, the notion of optical soliton has evolved into the concept of dissipative soliton. Dissipative solitons have unique properties that confer stability and robustness to the ultrashort pulses generated by mode-locked laser. Besides, they allow exploring unusual ultrafast dynamics, such as the generation of soliton molecules or that of incoherent pulses, among various possibilities.
