Herbário UFP

About About

The UFP Herbarium – Geraldo Mariz, belonging to the Biosciences Center’s (BC) Department of Botany of the Federal University of Pernambuco/UFPE, Brazil, was founded and indexed in 1968 by Dr. Geraldo Mariz, a pharmaceutical botanist deceased on July 25, 2012. The Herbarium has a collection that meets the needs of tuition-research-extension activities, initially housed on the eighth floor of UFPE’s Center of Philosophy and Humanities and later, in 1972, transferred together with the Department of Botany to Block A of the Department of Mycology of the former Mycology Institute next to the Pharmacy Department of UFPE’s Health Sciences Center.

As from 1987, with the Department of Botany’s own building, the UFP Herbarium began its operations on the first floor of this head office building, under trusteeship of biologist Marlene Barbosa as of 1996.

Since December 2003, the UFP Herbarium has been registered with the Ministry of Environment, according to Deliberation #48, of the Department of Genetic Heritage, identifying itself as a national public research institution, Trusted Custodian of Genetic Heritage component samples, the first in the State of Pernambuco to be registered as such. This collection was the only one in Brazil’s Northeast to be included in the “Letter to Brasília” document that, in December 18, 2002, together with over twenty other national institutions, negotiated with the Ministries of Science & Technology and the Environment the proposal of implementation of the NATURALIS Platform intended to devise a network to integrate Brazil’s biological collections, forerunner of current CNPq publications, supporting biological collections.

UFP collections were initially computerized as from January 1, 2001 within the Plants of the Northeast Program, an “Information, Dissemination and Training/SIDT” subproject, supported by the Northeastern Center of Plant Information/CNIP and by the Northeast Plant Association/APNE.
