TítuloPurcell Effect in single Nitrogen-Vacancy Defect in Nanodiamond Embedded in Liquid Crystal: an Experiment in Progress

ResumoNitrogen-vacancy defects in diamonds are colour centres widely investigated in the last years due to their characteristic physical properties and possible applications. The negatively charged single nitrogen vacancy defect (NV) is used in the development of high spatial resolution sensors. For instance, these emitters can be used for performing nanomagnetometry, nanothermometry and biolabelling, besides applications in areas like Quantum Information Processing and Spintronics. In this seminar, we will discuss the Purcell effect in single NV making a brief review of previous works in this area and propose a new system for investigating this effect. We will discuss the current progress of the experiment which consists in the measurement of the NV radiative lifetime changes when the defect is embedded in critical medium (a nematic liquid crystal) passing through the critical point. This approach leads to a controllable change of the boundary conditions of the electromagnetic modes surrounding the emitter, which is then monitored by the  lifetime measurement. The results of the first control experiments, as well as the characterization of the liquid crystal and of the individual emitter, will be presented.
