“Local probe techniques: a microscopic look at physical properties in matter” é tema de colóquio nesta sexta-feira (31)

The observation and comprehension of novel phenomena in condensed matter often comes from interactions arising at the microscopic or even the nanoscopic level, escaping to our standard tools and bringing a challenge to the scientists interested in such phenomena.  In this talk will be shown an overview of some local probe techniques used to observe novel magnetic and electronic properties in condensed matter. The advantages and drawbacks of each technique will be discussed, with particular emphasis in Mössbauer spectroscopy and muon spin rotation.  Some examples in observation of superconducting and magnetic phenomena, as well as studies involving single crystals, polycrystals, thin films and nanoparticles will be presented, to highlight its potential to understand physical phenomena in such conditions.
