All foreign exchange students need a Visa if they stay for more than three months in the country. The exchange students should apply for the Visa the earliest possible. It might take some time to get the Visa and they will need it before coming to Brazil in time to begin the semester. Students must submit the Letters of Acceptance and all other documents required to the Brazilian Consulates or Embassies at their home countries.

The student Visa is valid for one year. If there is need to renew it, it will be necessary to go to the Departmento de Polícia Federal ( DPF) 30 days before the expiration date.

After arriving in Brazil, all foreigners must register at the DPF, at the city where he will study, within 30 days. If a foreigner does not register according to the deadline, a fine will be charged for each day of delay. At the moment of the registration, an Identity Card for Foreigners will be issued. The necessary documents for registration are:
  • the application form issued by the DPF;
  • a copy of all used pages of the passport;
  • 2 recent color photos 3x4 on a white background;
  • a GRU application form and a GRU foreigner card form.
The applicant can download and complete both forms from the website www.dpf.gov.br . Using the codes 140082 and 140120, then pay the fee at the Banco do Brasil. This can be done before going to the DPF.
