The Chevrolet 7.4 liter engine is a 454-cubic inch V8 engine found in heavy-hauling Chevy trucks, like the Silverado 2500, or the loud-revving Camaro. Production of the engine began in 1970 in the Corvette Stingray.

  1. The Engine in 1998

    • By 1998 the Vortec V8 engine was being used in Chevrolet's line of big horsepower machines. The engine produced 255 to 290 horsepower. Cylinder heads became high flow, a new camshaft, roller valve lifters and a higher compression ratio increased fuel economy.

    • The 7.4 liter gasoline engine varies in fuel mileage because of the diverse vehicles and diverse circumstances in which the engine can be used. Muscle cars, heavy duty trucks, and motorhomes all differ greatly in what mileage results can be obtained. The more gas a driver gives to get the vehicle going and the amount of weight the vehicle must get going varies and affects mileage.

    Expected Mileage

    • There is nothing that can be done to this fuel injection engine that will make this an economy vehicle. The 1998 7.4 liter engine, like the one found in the GMC Sierra, with a capacity of 34 gallons of fuel in the gas tank, will get 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg). Towing a heavy load, the mileage could drop to 7 to 8 mpg. An RV with the large engine can expect to get 7 mpg, maybe 8 mpg going downhill with a wind behind the RV. However a one-ton truck model with this engine can expect to pull upward of 10,000 pounds.
